Abstract: Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. CAN is recognized as a strong independent predictor for cardiac events, it increases both mortality and morbidity risk in diabetic patients. The imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system due to an impaired autonomic function is leading to an increased arrhythmic risk. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the cardiac autonomic function and a reduced HRV in diabetic patients reflects a sympathetic dominance. In clinical practice HRV measurements are obtained with an analysis of RR fluctuations in continuous ECG monitoring. HRV indexes are analysed in time and frequency domains. Further researches are required to standardize HRV indexes by gender and age.
