Abstract: Sustainable prevention of iodine deficiency and achievement of optimal iodine nutrition in Romania is done for a long time. Thus, this pilot study proposes to evaluate the iodine nutrition state of 241 school children aged 6-7 years from one school located in each sector of Bucharest in 2015, after more than 10 years of compulsory universal salt iodization. The results of the study showed that the number of children with iodine deficiency decreased, while those with normal urine iodine increased, compared to the study performed before the compulsory universal salt iodization and median urinary iodine concentration was 203.2 that falls within the recommended values of World Health Organization. In conclusion, the iodine deficiency was not totally eradicated in Romania, but the situation has improved considerably over the previous 10 years.
