Abstract: The circular hollow structures are largely used in both construction and transportations industry. In order to fit with the lightweight trends, designers are focused to increase the stiffness of the joints, thus allowing the use of lighter section tubes. Gussets are present on structures in many shapes, size and placements. The paper is a static assessment of the most common side gusset shapes based on the stress (Hot Spot Stress), rigidity and lightweight criteria. Having a tubular T joint as a reference, within the paper eight gusset shapes are analyzed, in the end conclusions, design and manufacturing recommendations being made.
