Abstract: The first part of the paper presents general aspects regarding the rehabilitation engineering and prosthetics. Design of an upper limb active prosthetic device is constrained by strict conditions: lightweight, compact construction, quiet operation, attractive appearance and low costs. Beside some traditional actuators, the shape memory alloys actuators have specific features advantageous for prosthetic applications. The authors’ contribution in developing different actuation systems based on shape memory wires or helical springs is emphasized. Our projects can be divided in three categories: simple actuating elements, compact linear/rotational actuators and multiple actuators artificial muscles.
